COMUI Students Shine at 12th Annual Lanre Bello Inter-faculty Debate

Students from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan took the spotlight at the just concluded Lanre Bello Inter-faculty Debate that held last Saturday, 1st April 2023 at First Bank Building in the faculty of Agriculture by winning multiple awards. The event which was hosted by the University of Ibadan chapter of Junior Chamber International, had students from different faculties coming together to battle it out for public speaking supremacy. While representing their respective faculties, a number of students from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan stood out during the contest. Amarachi Nwaigwe won the award for the Best Orator of the event where she spoke for the faculty of Clinical Sciences. It was however a team win for her counterparts from the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences as Abigail Amusan and Toluwanimi Akinyode collectively won the second runner-up position for their faculty after a tie-breaking session with the faculty of Science.

This year’s edition of the event had students speaking on the theme The Future of the Nigerian Educational System and it featured both oratory and debate contests. 

According to Fareedah Oladejo, the President of Junior Chamber International, University of Ibadan, the Lanre Bello Inter-Faculty Debate is hosted every year by the Ibadan chapter of the Junior Chamber International in honour of their chartered president. It is hosted to give a platform for public speakers in the University of Ibadan to hone their skills and also to prepare them for bigger events such as Jaw War.

The faculty of Science eventually clinched the first runner-up position while the faculty of Arts took the first prize which comes with a reward of #50,000 courtesy of Junior Chamber International, University of Ibadan.
