ATHLETICO MADRID CROWNED CHAMPIONS AFTER AWAY VICTORY AGAINST REAL VALLADOLID
Atletico Madrid have been crowned champions of La Liga after beating Real Valladolid 2-1 on Saturday at Estadio Jose Zorilla stadium.
The club’s talisman, Luiz Suarez, scored the winning goal ridding Real Madrid any hope of winning the title after securing second position following a 2-1 win against Villarreal at home.
Things almost went sour for Atletico when Valladolid took the lead in the 18th minute before Angel Correa and Luiz Suarez came to the rescue in the 57th and 67th minutes respectively.
The Uruguayan striker whose goal earned Madrid their 11th title was especially emotional at the end of the match. He expressed his gratitude to the club for opening their doors for him after what seemed to be an unceremonious exit from his former club.
He didn’t mince words expressing his displeasure at his former club. “I had to live through a difficult situation, starting the season being under-appreciated and Atletico opened the door to give me the chance to show that I could still be force,” he said.
This may as well be a conciliatory achievement for the club following their abrupt departure from the Champions league in the round of 16 in March.
