DESPITE 85, 000 NAIRA HPTL, BMLS STUDENTS MAY PAY FOR PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS

As the first professional examination of the Basic Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) department draws nearer, the students involved have been informed of the likelihood to pay for the examination despite the newly imposed N85, 000 health professional training levy. This came just after the college publicly argued that the HPTL was meant for the conduct of examinations and to buy various teaching/training materials and equipments.

The news which was first reported by one of the students on Tuesday, 26th of June was however confirmed by the Deputy Director of Medical Microbiology, Mrs Ogunleye, on Friday in one of her classes with the medical microbiology (majored) students. She insisted that the money paid to the college is meant for UI examinations and that the university has nothing to do with the council’s own.

She said;

The council exam is not the same as university exam. Ideally, we should even buy reagents and materials which will make the fee go higher but we have done it such that your end of posting exam which is practical is merged with the professional examination so you can use the same materials the university has provided. However, council’s delegate (supervisors) will be paid honorarium and accommodated for the whole period. Last year, professor Ademowo was able to make the VC pay for the whole thing but now, UI is saying they can’t pay because they don’t have a hand in it”.
