Nigeria Beats Lone Stars of Liberia 2-1 in Friendly to Celebrate George Weah

The Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles, played the Lone Stars of Liberia in an international friendly in Monrovia on Tuesday. The match which was to celebrate the Liberian President, first African World Footballer of the Year, George Oppong Weah, held Tuesday evening at the 35,000–capacity Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

The Super Eagles defeated the Lone Stars 2-1 with the opening goal from Galatasaray’s forward Henry Onyekuru at the 10th minute while a header by Simeon Nwankwo at 34 minute from Etebo’s corner kick headed Nigeria into a 2-0 lead. The home side however pulled one back with a late Kpah Sherman penalty.
The match came three days after Nigeria had a comfortable 3-0 win over Seychelles at Victoria for the African 2019 Cup of Nations Qualifier. The friendly match was initially between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia was cancelled due to logistics reason.

The Liberia president, George Weah, 51years, who wore the number 14 jersey was the captain of his team and featured for 79 minutes. He received a standing ovation as he was substituted. Weah formally rested his number 14 jersey from the national team. The former AC Milan striker won his country’s presidential election last year defeating the incumbent Vice President, Joseph Boakai, and was sworn in as president in January.
