You’ve probably innocently asked someone, “what are you knitting?”, only to be rewarded with a murderous glare. And though it was only an innocent mistake, some crocheters consider it a grievous offence and vice versa. I know it’s not your fault that you don’t particularly know the difference between knitting and crochet, however, I’m here to prevent a future recurrence of such misunderstandings.
Though crochet and knitting are both worked with yarns and may have quite some similarities in the final outcome to most people, the tools and technique required are quite different. Crochet stitches are worked with a single hook, which also serves as the origin of the name. Knitting, on the other hand, is worked with two needles which may be straight or circular depending on the required project.
I can not say for certain which is the superior needle work- I’m sure crocheters and knitters have their respective biases, but each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Crochet is easier to learn as the techniques are easier to follow but the finished work is usually bulky with a lot of holes more often than not. Though knitting may prove to be a bit challenging to learn, the sheer beauty and texture of the outcome definitely makes it all worth it. Another important thing to note is that there is yet to be a machine invented that can repeat the stitches made by a crochet hook, however, knitting machines can be easily found.
The most beautiful thing about crocheting and knitting is the range of items that can be made. From blankets, to clothing items, to accessories and even toys, they can all be knitted or crocheted if you’re dedicated enough to the cause.
