THE CHELSEA NO 9: WILL LUKAKU BREAK THE CURSE?

0

Romelu Lukaku has completed a return to European Champions, Chelsea 10 years after first signing for the club following a £98million deal from Inter Milan. The 28-year-old Belgian striker since leaving Chelsea has played for Everton, Manchester United, and Inter Milan and has established himself as one of the best strikers in the world. In the time spent at Milan, he scored a total of 42 goals in 72 Serie A games, which is quite impressive.

With Tammy Abraham moving to Roma, Lukaku is set to take up the No 9 shirt for the club, a number which many believe is jinxed. In the past, the No 9 has been worn by 15 other players, some of which performed well while others flopped. Being given the No 9 in many clubs comes with a lot of prestige and great pride but this seems to be different in Chelsea as the shirt comes with a lot of burdens and has been called ‘cursed’ in recent years.

Lukaku’s return to London comes with many expectations with the 28-year-old looking forward to continuing his impressive goal-scoring run and hopefully breaking the ‘curse’ associated with the Chelsea No 9. Occupants of the Chelsea No 9 shirt range from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who performed well to the less prolific Steve Sidwell. The most recent player to wear the shirt include Tammy Abraham, Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Morata, Radamel Falcao and Fernando Torres.
