THE BATTLEGROUND IS OPENING AGAIN!!!
The biggest and most anticipated public speaking event in University of Ibadan, in Nigeria and even in Sub Saharan Africa is coming back. The competition, Jaw War is hosted annually by The Literary and Debate Society of the university. Trust me, everyone is pumped. The competition usually entails pitching halls and faculties against one another as they support or oppose chosen topics. A battle of wits and words.
The seventh edition of the competition commences on Wednesday, 29th of September, 2021 and Alexander Brown Hall is opening the event, going against Independence Hall for the first leg (Hall Category) of the preliminaries.
The hype for this year’s competition has been deafening and everyone’s expectations are understandably high. This may be due to the fact that the competition did not hold last year thanks to COVID-19 and everyone misses it. The most interesting parts of the competition are the punchlines and word play. The usual “hmmmmm” accompanied by symbolic snapping of fingers from the audience. What’s not to miss?
Jaw War cannot be talked about without mentioning intelligent and solid speakers like Olaniyan Dara, Adediran Adesokan, Ojewale Ridwan, Apollos Dikibo, Izuka Oscar-Romero, Nwagbara Izuchukwu, Asudemade Habeeb, Ernesto Idibia, Anastasia just to mention a few. How can I forget Otito-Jesu who is the incumbent president of the literary and Debate Society? These people had strong personalities to their speeches and the audience will always remember them. I think I speak for everyone when I say we are expecting the speakers this year to blow our minds.
Alexander Brown Hall faces Independence Hall tomorrow in the first leg of the Hall Category. The second leg will hold on Saturday, 2nd October, 2021.
On a final note, the audience remain a major part of the competition and it will be nice to see brownites show up for their people on Wednesday. Everyone needs the relief after a long day of postings or classes. Come watch people stand up, speak up and of course, shut up.
