The long-awaited sequel to the blockbuster movie, King of Boys, was released on 27th of August, 2021. The first part was released in 2018 and it was truly cinema-worthy, an overall blockbuster. It was about 3 hours long with exceptional breath-taking scenes that took the viewers through thrilling, sad, funny and suspenseful moments. Without a doubt, you would agree with me that the hype and publicity the sequel got was well-deserved.
The sequel, the return of the King, is a 7-episode limited series written and produced by Kemi Adetiba, the oracle herself. Each episode is about 50 minutes long and I think it was worth it. I must commend the incredible casting of this movie. Every single person killed his/her role starting from the King, Sola Sobowale who acted as the powerful Eniola Salami to Toni Tones as young Eniola to Makanaki (Reminisce “Alaga Ibile”) to Illbliss , Nse-Ikpe Etim as Jumoke Randle, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Ade Tiger, Governor Randle, Aare and of course, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett who magnificently bodied the role of Chief Mrs Randle. It seemed like they were all born for the roles they were given. It was impeccable!
The movie started with Alhaja Eniola Salami returning to Nigeria after fleeing from the country while in jail with the help of Nurudeen Gobir, an Inspector who later became her friend. Being cleared of all charges, she came back as a free woman with no children and to the surprise of everyone, announced her intentions to run for the post of governor against the incumbent governor, Governor Tunde Randle. Later in the movie, she struggled between being a changed person, her past and power.
The most shocking reveal to me was Makanaki being alive. It was nice to see him in this sequel as it spiced up the movie. I think what I liked the most about the movie was that she came back as a softer person who was determined to change and not a ruthless, revenge-thirsty person. The story build-up was superb. The most memorable and entertaining scene was in the last episode when it seemed like Ade tiger was betraying Eniola Salami then boom, a twist. I had goosebumps watching that scene, a 10/10 I must say. Truthfully, I did not think Makanaki and Eniola reconciling was going to be so easy.
Another beautiful thing about this sequel is the script. The proverbs, Eniola Salami’s eulogies, the choice of words, everything was on point. And the costumes? Damn!
The last scene was particularly incredible. I liked that we were not left to imagine what was going to happen to Makanaki. All in all, Kemi Adetiba is a genius. This sequel was just excellent. Suspenseful, thrilling, jaw-dropping scenes, all in one movie. The future of Nollywood might really be in good hands. Anyway, the sequel is exclusively available on Netflix. It is very entertaining and totally worth your time. I was blown away, you most likely will be too.
