On the 7 November 2018, the Annual Ibadan Medical Specialist Group (IMSG) had their symposium- _Improving Life Expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa_ at the Paul Hendricks Lecture Theatre. It was attended by IMSG members, medical teachers, medical practitioners, other allied health professionals, university college students and members of the community.
Professor Adefunke Oyemade, a professor of Medicine and an octogenarian was the chairperson of the day. Mr Olufunso Adedeji, a consultant colorectal surgeon in the University of Birmingham UK, on his lecture _Trends In Life Expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa_ , elucidated the improvement in life expectancy over twenty years in sub-Saharan Africa, highest been Nigeria, the effect of road traffic accident as a prime cause of death, causing more deaths than malaria, HIV and cancer combined.
Professor Rotimi Jaiyesimi, an associate medical director for Patient Safety and consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecology Basilidon and Thurrock University Hospitals United Kingdom gave a lecture on _Healthcare Planning and Emerging Technologies to improve Healthcare Delivery and Care._ Professor Adedoyin Soyibo a Professor of Economics and Director Emeritus Health Training and Research Programme, University of Ibadan discussed the ways in which health funding can be improved in Nigeria on his lecture _Health Systems Financing: The Path To Universal converge._
Mr Olujimi Coker a consultant surgeon, chief medical director, Lagoon Hospitals, Lagos Nigeria on his lecture titled _Professionalism in Medical Practice_ discussed extensively on altruism, trust and autonomy as the core of professionalism, the value of emotional intelligence as a differentiating factor between a good and bad doctor and the pitfalls of social media as a professional.
At the end of the lectures, a book titled _Improving Life Expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa_ was launched by the President of Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association (I COMAA) Dr Abib Olamitoye and it was given to all attendees for free.
One of the projects done by the Ibadan Medical Specialist Group (IMSG) was building a new pre-clinical school library for basic medical students in the University of Ibadan.
